A Decade Remembered: Honoring Archbishop Boniface Lele's Legacy

 




It has been ten years since his Grace Archbishop Boniface Lele, Emeritus Archbishop of Mombasa and the second Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kitui died. 


Boniface Lele was born on April 14, 1947, and ordained to the priesthood on December 8, 1974. He died on April 9, 2014. is buried at the Mombasa Cathedral Grounds. 


On November 16, 1995, he was appointed Bishop of Kitui Diocese and consecrated as the 2nd Bishop of Kitui Diocese on February 2, 1996, at St. Michael's School for the Deaf grounds by Cardinal Jozef Tomko, Principal Consecrator, accompanied by Cardinal Maurice Otunga and Bishop Raphael Ndingi. 



He was appointed Archbishop of Mombasa on April 1, 2005, after serving as the 2nd Bishop of Kitui till then. During this time, he had ordained 34 priests. 


As a Kitui priest, he served in Mutito, Kabati, Cathedral, and Mutune parishes, as well as the Education Secretary, Vocations Director, and Pastoral Coordinator. 


He also served as Vicar General of the Diocese of Kitui from May 1985 until November 1995. 


The late archbishop was affectionately remembered for his humility and simplicity. 

This was witnessed during his tenure as Bishop of Kitui Diocese. His tagline was "Love unites"
