Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has declared Wednesday, April 10 a national public holiday to commemorate Idd-ul-Fitr.
In a special gazette notification dated Tuesday, April 9, Prof Kindiki stated that the day will be allocated for the Muslim celebration.
Idd-ul-Fitr commemorates the completion of Ramadan's month-long fasting period.
Muslims in Kenya began fasting Ramadan in early March.
Muslims believe Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, to be the holiest. Idd-ul-Fitr takes place on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic calendar.
