2024 Olympic Games: Kipchoge, Obiri in as Kenya name squad for Paris showdown

Kenya has unveiled the final lineup for its men's and women's marathon teams set to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Following the initial provisional squad announcement, Athletics Kenya (AK) has made some strategic decisions, resulting in the exclusion of several athletes from the final roster.

The men's roster includes marathon icon Eliud Kipchoge, whose unparalleled achievements have cemented his status as one of the greatest distance runners of all time.

Joining him are Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich, Benson Kipruto, Timothy Kiplagat, and Alexander Mutiso.

On the women's front, Kenya will equally field a strong team led by world-record holder Brigid Kosgei and Hellen Obiri.

They are joined by rising stars Rosemary Wanjiru, Sharon Lokedi, and Peres Chepchirchir, forming a formidable team with the potential to clinch multiple medals.

Among the notable omissions from the men's team is Bernard Kiprop Koech, who showcased remarkable potential but fell short in securing a spot in the final five.

Koech's absence marks a surprising twist, considering his past performances in prestigious events such as the London and Chicago Marathons.

Similarly, Titus Kipruto, despite being a strong contender initially, did not make the final cut for the men's team.

In the women's category, Joycilline Jepkosgei, who exhibited promising form in the London Marathon and other competitions, has been left out of the final team.

Additionally, Selev Chepyego Kaptich, despite her consistent performances, failed to secure a spot in the women's team.

The final teams are now set to undergo intensive training and preparation in the coming months under the guidance of Athletics Kenya, the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) and other relevant stakeholders.

The final three in each and the two reserves in each category will be announced a day to the olympics.
