Kirinyaga Woman Rep Njeri Maina backs Karua for Azimio top seat

Kirinyaga Woman Rep Njeri Maina wants Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua to take over the leadership of the Azimio La Umoja coalition as Raila Odinga seeks the chairmanship of the African Union Commission.

While supporting Odinga’s bid for the AU top job, the United Democratic Alliance legislator said Karua was best suited to take over the opposition leadership due to her political acumen.

Speaking during a Sunday mass at St Monica Kiarugu Church in Kirinyaga County, Njeri described Karua as politically influential and a capable leader with a clean record.

“With Raila eyeing the AU job, I support Martha Karua to take over as leader of the Azimio Coalition so that she can continue championing women’s leadership in the country… Karua has a solid record of integrity that has not been tainted by corruption scandals,” she told the congregation.

Ms Karua, who had remained silent on the succession battle in the opposition despite being Mr Odinga’s running mate in the 2022 presidential election, has recently spoken out, insisting that as second in command in Azimio, she is better placed to lead the coalition in Mr Odinga’s absence.

She has also launched regional consultative meetings for her party, Narc Kenya, with the aim of strengthening the outfit for the upcoming succession battle and the 2027 elections.
