Energy continues to be the foundation of
development and a crucial means of achieving the Bottom-up Economic
Transformation Agenda (BETA).
The Kenya Power backup National Control
Centre in the coastal region was formally put into service by Cabinet
Secretary David Chirchir to ensure the security of the nation's electrical
supply.
The backup National Control Centre will
provide a backup power dispatch point in the event that the primary National
Control Centre fails.
The facility will also serve as a training
centre to enhance the capability and technical proficiency of power system
operators.
A
grant from GIZ under the Power System Readiness for Integration of Variable
Renewable Energies (VRE) project, which is being carried out in collaboration
with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, made it possible for establishment
of the backup facility at a cost of KSh.50 million.
Thus, in order to improve grid supply
continuity and deliver much-needed system stability and reliability to the
coastal region and the entire nation, the upgrading of this regional control
centre has arrived at the perfect moment.
