Four Traffic Cops Arrested For Extorting Money From Motorists In Embu

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested four traffic police officers on Thursday for extorting motorists on the Embu-Siakago Road.

Following their arrest, the officers, all from Embu's Itabua Police Station, were taken to the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station for processing.

They were later booked at the Kilimani Police Station and are currently being held for arraignment in court.

The officers are; Police Inspector Sammy Cherogony, Corporal Maurice Mwakachora, and Police Constables Fozia Hallake and Adan Mohamed Iman.

"All four had been under surveillance by EACC officers for some time before they were apprehended today," a source at the anti-graft watchdog told Citizen Digital.

The arrests come amidst an EACC-led crackdown targeting rogue traffic police officers soliciting bribes and extorting money from motorists along major roads.

"The commission conducted surveillance on several major roads and noted that despite the ongoing efforts to end graft in the country, what most traffic police officers are doing is no longer bribery but extortion," the source added.
