Yatta MP Robert Basil Urges Government To Address Doctor's Grievances

Member of the National Assembly for Yatta Constituency in Machakos County Robert Ngui Basil has urged the government to address Doctors' Grievances as soon as possible in order to end the ongoing strike.

According to the legislator, many Kenyans are suffering, with many more dying each day as a result of a lack of medical attention.

Speaking at the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party media briefing in Nairobi on Tuesday, MP Basil stated that the government, specifically Health Minister Susan Nakhumicha, must be more humane and address doctors' concerns.

"By today, we've lost many Kenyans due to the ongoing doctor's strike. The government should have handled Doctor's Grievances, but they seem not caring and humane. Our mothers are giving birth on the streets.  This is a shame," said Basil.

He called on President William Ruto to step in and address the ongoing doctor's strike adding that Kenyans across the country have continued to suffer the brunt since services have been grounded in all public health facilities.

MP Basil is one among a section of MPs who have threatened to impeach Health CS Susan Nakhumicha over the ongoing strike.

This comes after the Azimio la Umoja Coalition announced on Tuesday that it will join doctors in staging a nationwide strike if the government does not provide a tangible solution to the impasse.

Led by Coalition principal and former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Azimio stated that the government had failed to address pressing issues raised by healthcare practitioners.

“This regime is failing its citizens. We’re consulting, and if they do not stop this strike, we as Kenyans will be free to join...(because) the only language they (government) understands ni kuenda kwa mitaa,” said Kalonzo.

“Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has outlawed the strike, meaning beginning tomorrow we might start seeing teargas. As Azimio we’re saying it is their (doctors’) constitutional right under Article 37, and if this government instead of addressing the root cause, is going to use teargas and force against the doctors, as Azimio we’re ready to come out to stand with them,” DAP Kenya party leader Eugene Wamalwa added.

According to Azimio, the government must honour any outstanding Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs) between the government and the doctors' union.
