Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has called for a judicial inquest into the helicopter crash that killed Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Ogolla and nine others last week on Thursday.
The coalition during a Parliamentary Group (PG) Meeting on Tuesday also opposed investigations led by the military that is closed to civilians.
A team from the Kenya Air Force was dispatched to the accident scene on Friday to establish the cause of the air crash.
“On the death of General Ogolla, the Parliamentary Group shared deep condolences with his family and the families of those who perished with him. Further, the PG called for a judicial inquest into the accident and death as opposed to mere investigation led by the military that is closed to civilians,” Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi said, reading the statement on behalf of the PG.
The Raila Odinga-led Azimio la Umoja also demands that families of the victims be independently represented in the investigation and inquest.
Azimio asked Mathare North MP Anthony Oluoch and Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua to immediately begin the parliamentary process of forming a house investigation commission to look into the CDF's death.
"Already, we are seeing worrying signs. We have noted that Mr Ruto set up a separate investigation team away from the one gazette by CS Kipchumba Murkomen in the gazette notice dated April 8, 2024," Wandayi said.
The late General Ogolla died on Thursday last week after a chopper crashed in Tot, Elgeyo Marakwet County.
He was buried on Sunday at his home in Ng’iya, Siaya County.
