Mzalendo Kibunja Charged With Corruption Over 490 Million Ghost Workers Scandal

Mzalendo Kibunja, former Director-General of the National Museums of Kenya, was charged today before the Milimani Law Courts with misappropriation of public funds totaling Ksh. 491 million.

Kibunja and four other people were arraigned before Senior Principal Magistrate Victor Wakhumile, where they were charged with conspiracy to commit corruption, abuse of office, money laundering, acquiring proceeds of crime, and financial misconduct, among other charges.

Court documents seen indicate that the accused conspired to embezzle the amount by arranging to fraudulently include on the payroll the names of persons claimed to be employees of the National Museums of Kenya.

They all denied the charges and were released on a bond of Ksh.5 million each with an alternative bond of Ksh 10 million.

The case will be mentioned on June 2, 2024 for pre-trial.
