KUPPET: Parliament Is Blind To Government Workers' Plight

Teachers have accused the National Assembly of turning a blind eye to Kenyan workers who face significant challenges.

The teachers faulted members of parliament for allegedly avoiding discussing issues affecting government employees.

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers' (Kuppet) Secretary General, Akello Misori, described the Kenyan parliament as dysfunctional and incapable of discussing issues of concern to workers.

"Some MPs are absent when serious debates are being discussed," he said.

The KUPPET secretary general mentioned the doctors' strike. Medics have been on strike for three weeks over a variety of issues they want the Ministry of Health to address, including promotions and the hiring of intern doctors, among others.

Mr Misori stated that teachers face similar issues. He stated that some of the challenges had previously been presented to parliament.

However, Kuppet leadership claimed that MPs were avoiding issues raised by teachers.

According to Mr Misori, parliament has previously asked teachers to present a survey to back up their claims.

"The Parliament has its own department that conducts research. It is up to them to look into it," the unionist said.
