Rovanpera Leads Toyota To Safari Rally Glory

Kalle Rovanperä became a two-time winner of Safari Rally Kenya on Sunday afternoon, winning by 1m 37.8s after leading since Friday morning.

In by far the most difficult FIA World Rally Championship round of the season, Rovanperä's meticulous balance of speed and maturity ultimately secured his 12th career victory.

The Finn, co-driven by Jonne Halttunen, opened up a nearly one-minute lead after winning all of Friday's rock-strewn stages around Lake Naivasha, then held on to finish Saturday two minutes ahead as the chasing pack suffered mechanical issues and tyre damage.

That cushion enabled the two-time WRC champion to drive for a finish on Sunday's final leg, which culminated in breathtaking scenery at Hell's Gate, with Kenyan President William Ruto in attendance.

Takamoto Katstuta completed a Toyota GR Yaris 1-2, extending the Japanese marque's manufacturers' championship lead to four points over Hyundai Motorsport, while M-Sport Ford Puma hotshot Adrien Fourmaux finished 47.3 seconds behind.

"It's always special to win here," Rovanperä exclaimed. "Also, a legendary event for Toyota." We've always been so good here, and that will continue.

As they say in Africa, the car in front is always a Toyota!
