The Nairobi County Assembly has finally passed a motion banning street parties and reggae concerts in the city.
According to the bill's sponsor, Majority Leader Peter Imwatok, the bill seeks to reduce immorality and protect residents from unnecessary noise disturbances.
Imwatok insists that with the passage of the bill, residential areas will be free of the immorality associated with street parties.
“T’m very happy with my fellow MCAs for feeling the sense of illegality versus people’s rights. I am a reggae fan but doing the same in residential areas is unlawful, we have clubs,” Imwatok said.
Imwatok, who also chairs Nairobi County's ad hoc revenue collection committee, has stated that he will work to ensure that the new law is enforced and implemented.
Imwatok tabled the motion last week linking the street festivals to a sharp rise in crime.
“There has been a growing trend where individuals organise street parties in the form of reggae concerts in residential areas, characterised with all kinds of criminal activities, immoralities and drug abuse, mugging of residents, and loud music.”
