Maasai Mara University Announces Reopening After Indefinite Closure

Maasai Mara University has reopened, three weeks after it was closed indefinitely due to student riots.

In a memo dated March 13, students were instructed to return to school, with different reporting dates for different cohorts.

“This is to inform you that Senate during the meeting held on Wednesday, March 13, 2024, resolved that the University be reopened,” the memo signed by the Registrar of Academic Affairs read in part.

The Registrar, however, issued three ultimatums for the students before their admission, including the payment of a Ksh1,000 mandatory penalty for damage caused during the riots.

Further, the students must clear all their school fees arrears and sign a bonding form available on the institution’s website.

“Kindly note that all payments should be made through the Jiunge App by the time of reporting,” the memo states.

“No student will be allowed to enter the school premises if they do not meet the reopening conditions above.”

All first, second and fourth-year students are set to report back on Sunday, March 17 and commence lectures on Monday, March 18, 2024.

Also in the cohort, are all students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Programme and all students undertaking Diploma and Certificate programmes.

“All third-year students except those pursuing Nursing are required to report back on Friday, April 26 and resume lectures on Monday, April 29, 2024," the memo read in part.
