Kenya has earned provisional approval for Sh43 billion from the PEPFAR Country Operational Plan (COP) to fund HIV response from October 2024 to September 2025.
Kenya received the multibillion-dollar grant support during the COP23 approval meeting, where the US Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, expressed confidence in Kenya’s ability to achieve epidemic control, including ending AIDS in children by 2027.
The approval meeting that took place between the Kenyan government was led by Health Cabinet Secretary Suzan Nakhumicha and the Office of the Global Aid Coordinator, with the attendance of Kenya Chair of COP23 Julia Martin.
Nakhumicha said the collaboration between the ministry and county governments, as well as the Kenya PEPFAR team, will greatly help the country achieve epidemic control.
“The Ministry of Health is committed to steward the response and provide a conducive environment in the convergence of the HIV response in the context of UHC as the country accelerates the epidemic control efforts,” said CS Nakhumicha.
John Nkengasong, the US Global AIDS Coordinator, also lauded Kenya’s strong commitment and efforts in managing HIV.
He stated that the Kenyan government’s efforts to transform the health sector through the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and Primary Health Care (PHC) platforms are a critical pillar to help the nation achieve a sustainable HIV response.
