In response to the escalating gang violence in Haiti, US President Joe Biden has authorized the disbursement of Ksh1.3 billion (USD10 million) worth of weapons and equipment for Haitian police officers.
This decision, reported by the Miami Herald, comes as a crucial step to bolster the capabilities of the Haitian Police Force in addressing the security challenges gripping the nation.
The weapons package, which includes firearms, ammunition, bulletproof vests, and helmets, has been authorized by President Biden and will be procured by Secretary of State Antony Blinken. This move underscores the United States’ commitment to supporting Haiti in restoring security, law, and order, while also aiding in the protection of civilians.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre reiterated this commitment, highlighting that the support is aimed at assisting Haitians in establishing stability and facilitating a peaceful transition of power.
The procurement of these weapons and equipment is part of a broader effort to strengthen Haiti’s security apparatus before the deployment of the Multinational Security Support Team, led by Kenya. However, the deployment of Kenyan police officers is contingent upon the establishment of a fully functional transitional council in Haiti.
US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman shed light on the complexities surrounding the deployment, citing the need for training Kenyan police officers and setting up logistical support before their mission in Haiti. She emphasized that this mission differs from traditional UN peacekeeping operations and requires meticulous preparation.
Despite challenges such as legal rulings, funding delays, and logistical obstacles, Kenya remains steadfast in its commitment to deploying police officers to Haiti. President William Ruto affirmed Kenya’s readiness and determination to fulfil its obligations, signalling a collective effort among global partners to address the security crisis in Haiti.
As Haiti grapples with persistent violence and instability, international support, including the recent US weapons disbursement, underscores the urgency of restoring peace and security for the Haitian people.
