Police Probe University Student's Death Following Alleged Suicide

Siaya County police are investigating the death of a 25-year-old university student who died after allegedly attempting suicide in his rented home at Southlands Estate in Siaya town.

Laban Onyango, a student at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology Siaya campus, was pronounced dead at the Siaya County Referral Hospital.

According to Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo, the hospital's Medical Superintendent Dr Michael Oduor reported the incident to Siaya Police Station, stating that a dead body had been brought to their casualty room as an emergency.

Dr. Oduor stated that officers from that station visited the hospital and found that the deceased's girlfriend, Sharon Achola, a student at the same University's Siaya Campus, rushed his boyfriend to the hospital after he attempted to hang himself with a lesso.

According to Mr Kimaiyo, Sharon's boyfriend paid her a visit on Tuesday morning, and during the night he threatened to commit suicide, even posting about it on Facebook, claiming that his parents and siblings were making his life difficult.

Sharon awoke on Wednesday morning and went to take a bath, only to return and find the door locked from the inside.

She then raised an alarm, attracting neighbours who quickly responded and climbed over the roof, only to find Laban Onyago hanging with a lesso around his neck.

Mr. Kimaiyo stated that they proceeded to cut the lesso and rushed Onyango to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The scene was processed and documented before the body was taken to the same hospital mortuary for autopsy.
