Rashid Echesa To Spend Easter In Police Cells

 


Former sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa to spend Easter holiday in police custody.

The Kenya Water Tower Agency Chairman was arrested after going to a police station to report a kidnapping case.

He is currently detained at Muthaiga Police Station, earlier on Police had denied his Lawyers access to the detention cells claiming orders from their superiors restricted them from doing so.

According to his Lawyers, Cliff Ombeta and Danstan Omari, Rashid is facing three counts including Cyberbullying, obtaining money by false pretences and conspiracy to commit fraud.

Rashid claims his arrest was politically orchestrated.

Efforts to have him released on police cash bail pending arraignment in court were futile.

This came a week after a man police said was Echesa's handler was charged in Kibera Court on Wednesday, March 20, with extorting more than Sh240 million from Barasa.

William Simiyu Matere, also known as Elijah, appeared before Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Ann Mwangi and was charged with two counts of demanding property with menace and conspiracy to commit a felony.

According to the prosecution, on various dates between December 2023 and March 18th, 2024, at an unknown location within the Republic of Kenya, Fernandez Odinga Barasa was threatened with a total sum of Sh240 million.

The other count alleges that on the same date, he conspired with others not in court to commit a felony, specifically demanding property with threats and extorting Sh240 million from Barasa.
