A Grant Agreement of Euro 4 million (Kshs
573,4 million), has been signed by the governments of Kenya and Italy for the
Sustainable Management and Restoration of Cherangany Forest Ecosystems for
Climate Change Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods.
The Italian Republic's ambassador to Kenya,
H.E. Roberto Natali, and Prof. Njuguna Ndung'u, the National Treasury and
Economic Planning CS, signed the agreement today in Nairobi.
Speaking at the signing, CS Prof. Ndung'u
stated that the Government of Kenya has acquired over 1.28 billion euros, or
Ksh. 181 billion, to date for support of a number of sectors, including water
services, education, health, and infrastructure, among others, which has made a
significant contribution to our nation's development.
According to the CS, the project intends to
support low-carbon and climate-resilient socioeconomic development in order to
enhance the environmental sustainability of the Cherangany water tower.
Prof. Ndung’u expressed his appreciation to
the Italian government for joining the group of partners who have committed to walking
the restoration journey with him. He also indicated his readiness to provide up
to 150 million euros (Ksh.21.5 Billion), in budget support for the continuing
DPO.
